A top ten list is very subjective at best but I'm going to indulge in some of my top tens. The first off is rock/metal songs. As I'm making this list I'm only allowing a group or artist to be represented one time and I'm not putting the songs in any particular order....there'll just be ten of them.
AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long - Being my all time favourite group they were going to be represented and it was just a matter of picking the song. And what a tough choice that was as there's so many AC/DC classics. I could of chosen any of about twenty songs but I think the line about "knocking me out with those American thighs" won it for me and if you look at mt profile page you can see why!
Lifehouse - First Time - A modern rock group that just plays good old fashioned rock music with the odd ballad thrown in for good luck. This particular song would definitely be in my all time favourite top three. They're probably more famous for the worldwide hit 'Hanging by a Moment' which is good but not a classic.
Kiss - Sure Know Something - Boy is this song smooth. The simplicity of the arrangement and the sound of Paul Stanley's voice go together like cereal and milk. A great song that never gets old.
The Cure - Burn - I'm not a big fan of The Cure in general and they're not really a rock group but I do believe that 'Burn' transcends the emo/pop crap they usually do and ventures into rock territory. You might recognise 'Burn' as the theme of the movie 'The Crow'.
The Quireboys - Hey You - Here's a big hit from the 80s that faded into obscurity never to be remembered...except by me. I loved this song when it was first released and still love it today. A fine song is like a fine wine in that it gets better with age. A catchy chorus with a great tune makes this one of my all time favourites.
Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills - Historical biopics don't usually make great songs but Bruce Dickenson and the boys have made this a favourite amongst heavy metal fans. Maiden have had bigger hits but in my mind they've never had a better hit.
Motorhead - Louie Louie - Yes, Lemmie hardly has the greatest singing voice around. Yes, it's almost a sin not to like 'Ace of Spades' the most. But, yes, 'Louie Louie' is my favourite Motorhead song. Just listen to the chords that are played. They're genius in their simplicity and what's more it sounds great so the chords are played over and over and the lyrics hardly matter.
Aerosmith - Jaded - It wouldn't really be a top ten rock list without Aerosmith would it? As with AC/DC there was a whole bunch of songs I could have chosen but the feel good essence of this particular song is what makes it my personal favourite Aerosmith song.
Meat Loaf - Bat out of Hell - In many ways this is the classic rock song of my generation. It's groundbreaking in its musical arrangement and has Meat Loaf singing at the peak of his vocals. And like many a woman has found out....like a bat out of hell I'll be gone when the morning comes!
Guns N' Roses - Yesterdays - I'm sure not many people would pick this particular song as their GNR favourite. I grew up on 'Appetite for Destruction' and although it paved the way for the 'Use Your Illusion' albums it wasn't quite as polished as UYI. Therefore I chose a more recent hit and I just always find myself singing along to 'Yesterdays' more than any other.
And there you have it. Only mentioning ten songs precludes a bunch of others that might have made it in on another day but for what it's worth I'm quite happy with the results.
It's my life.
